ATS-compatible CV: how to get past the recruitment robots

Updated July 3, 2026 · 6 min read

You apply, you get no reply — and sometimes it wasn't even a human who ruled you out. A large share of applications is first filtered by an ATS (Applicant Tracking System), the software that sorts CVs before the recruiter's eyes. Here's how to make your CV ATS-compatible to clear this first filter.

100 ATS ≈25

What exactly is an ATS?

An ATS is application-management software. It "reads" your CV, extracts the text, and compares it to the offer: job title, skills, keywords, experience. A poorly structured CV or one lacking keywords gets a low score… and never reaches a human.

The 5 rules of an ATS-compatible CV

1. A simple, machine-readable format

ATS handle complex layouts poorly. Avoid:

Prefer a linear structure, with clear section titles ("Experience", "Skills", "Education") and a text PDF export (not a scanned image).

2. Reuse the keywords from the offer

The ATS looks for matches. Reuse the exact terms from the offer — job title, technologies, skills — when they genuinely match your profile. If the offer says "project management", don't only say "coordination": include "project management" too.

Tip: spot the words that recur in the offer and check they appear (naturally) in your CV. That's what our job matching tool does automatically.

3. Standard job titles

A creative title ("Growth Ninja") passes filters poorly. Use the recognized job title, then specify your specialty right after if needed.

4. An explicit skills section

Add a "Skills" section listing your technical and professional skills. It's an area ATS analyze first for matching.

5. Quantified results

Beyond the ATS, it's the human recruiter who decides next. Measurable achievements (figures, %, amounts) make the difference at the next stage.

ATS-compatible doesn't mean "stuffed with keywords"

Beware the opposite excess: a CV artificially crammed with keywords is penalized by modern ATS and puts recruiters off. The goal is a natural, structured and relevant CV that uses the right terms because they genuinely describe your experience.

In summary

An ATS-compatible CV is one that's easy for the machine to read and rich in the right keywords, without sacrificing human readability. Combine it with an optimized LinkedIn profile (see our complete guide) and you maximize your chances at every stage.
